Baku / 07/01/17 / Turan: In the evening of June 30, the demolition of the Haji Javad mosque started in the Yasamal district of Baku, Turan reports.
"Twice in April, the mosque was tried to be demolished, but believers expressed their disagreement, and the government suspended the demolition. Then the representatives of the mosque were received by the executive. We were promised they would build a new mosque for us. They said they would start demolishing only after the construction of a new mosque," the resident Afgan Hazratov told Turan IA.
The reason for the demolition is the construction of a new road and reconstruction work in the area of the former Soviet Street.
Believers said they had gathered at noon prayers and there had been no warning, they were simply told the mosque was being emptied.
Last night around the mosque about 100 people gathered. Police came to the area.
On the construction of a new mosque, an agreement was reached with the State Committee for Work with Religious Communities, the mosque community said. The Committee itself stated a new mosque would be built in the Yasamal district of the capital.
On April 12 this year there was an attempt to demolish this mosque, but two hundred believers did not allow them to do so.
On April 13, President Ilham Aliyev, considering the dissatisfaction of believers, instructed to suspend the demolition of the mosque, to study the issue comprehensively and to take a decision. -0-
