Hilal Mammadov interrogated by the State Security Service (SGB) in the case of Igbal Abilov
On January 23, Hilal Mammadov, a member of the Board of the Public Council of Talysh of Azerbaijan (OSTA), was interrogated by the State Security Service (SGB) as a witness in the case of researcher Igbal Abilov, who is accused of treason. As reported by Turan, Mammadov was questioned about Abilov's activities, scientific works, and publications.
"I said that I know Igbal Abilov as a young scholar, researcher, and educator. His research concerned not only the Talysh people but also other peoples of the region. Some topics related to the folklore, history, and culture of the Talysh people were suggested by me to him," Mammadov said.
He expressed confidence in Abilov's innocence. "Such prominent representatives of Azerbaijan's intelligentsia should not be in prison, but should be free to continue their scientific research," Mammadov added. He noted that the interrogation lasted for about two hours and that the treatment was respectful. It was not possible to obtain comments from the SGB.
*Igbal Abilov was arrested on July 22, 2024, on charges of treason, calls against the state on behalf of foreign organizations, and inciting national and religious enmity. It is claimed that all these crimes were committed under the direction of Armenian intelligence services.
Abilov denies the charges and states that he was engaged solely in scientific activities. A large group of scholars from different countries worldwide has appealed to the leadership of Azerbaijan, requesting assistance in securing Abilov's release. Human rights activists have recognized Abilov as a political prisoner. On November 19, 2024, the court extended Abilov's detention by another 4 months.
