Ilham Aliyev: Azerbaijan surprised all of Europe

Baku is constructing a number of major sports facilities and will build new ones for the first European Olympic Games that will be conducted in Azerbaijan. The most important project is the large Olympic Stadium, which will be the largest sports facility in the region. President Ilham Aliyev, speaking yesterday at the National Olympic Committee meeting, stated this.

"It is of historic significance that these Games are committed to us. I immediately congratulate the people of Azerbaijan on the occasion," said Aliyev.  "I want to say again that this decision has played a role in a number of important factors, above all, the development of our country. Twenty years we have lived as an independent state. In that historically short period we have establish ourselves as a developing, dynamic, and modern country on the world map. Our international reputation is extremely high. Evidence to this was in the election to the UN Security Council with the support of 155 countries of the world and there is no international structure above it."

In Europe, a serious crisis continues with no end in sight.  "These processes have been going on for years, and every year Azerbaijan has surprised Europe with its economic gains during the crisis." The world's leading rating agencies has reduced the ratings of a number of leading European countries, while increasing the credit rating of Azerbaijan, Aliyev said.

He promised that the Games would be held at a high level, although there are only two years left.  "There is no other country in the world that could develop at such a pace. Two years is, of course, a very short time. But I am sure, that all necessary measures, technical and organizational issues will be resolved and the first European Olympic Games will become historic, not only because it will be the first Games of the kind, but because they will be the best Games," reported Aliyev.

As always, he made plans for the next few years, as if anticipating the outcome of the upcoming 2013 presidential election. -02D-
