Ilham Aliyev Received British Minister
Baku / 14.12.17 / Turan: President Ilham Aliyev today received the Minister of Trade and Export Promotion of Great Britain, co-chairman of the bilateral intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation, Baroness Rona Fairhead, who is visiting Baku.
As stated in the official message, the parties noted the successful development of Azerbaijan"s ties with Great Britain in the political, economic, energy and other spheres. It was indicated that there is a potential for expanding cooperation.
Aliyev noted that Great Britain is the largest foreign investor in Azerbaijan, and BP is the main partner in global energy projects.
Pointing to the diversification of the Azerbaijani economy, Aliyev noted that British companies can be both investors and contractors of non-oil projects.
For his part, Rona Fairhead expressed the readiness of the British government to expand cooperation.
During the meeting, prospects for cooperation in the energy field, the successful implementation of the Shahdeniz-2 gas project, and the extension of the contract for the Azeri-Chirag-Gunashli fields were also discussed.
An exchange of views took place on the opportunities for British companies to participate in infrastructure projects, trade, mutual investment, alternative energy, agriculture, tourism, and education. -06D--

On January 15, the Tbilisi Court of Appeals rejected the appeal of Afghan Sadigov, the founder of the Azel TV website, who had protested his extradition to Azerbaijan. Sadigov’s wife, Sevinj Sadigova, stated that this was the final judicial instance in Georgia making a decision on the case, Turan reported. On the other hand, lawyer Mariam Kvelashvili informed Turan that the defense would continue legal steps to prevent the extradition of Afghan Sadigov. According to his wife, Afghan has been on hunger strike for 117 days, and his health is critical.

On January 15, the Yasamal District Court rejected the motion to change the detention measure for Azer Gasymly, the director of the Institute of Political Management, his lawyer, Agyl Laidj, to Turan. "Azer Gasymly stated during the trial that the charges against him were fabricated and related to his socio-political activities," the lawyer said. An appeal will be filed against the court's decision.
