Journalist Seymour Hazy arrested for 2 months
Absheron District Court on Saturday choose in respect of the newspaper "Azadlig" reporter Seymour Hazy a preventive measure of arrest for 2 months. He is charged with disorderly conduct.
As the press service of the Prosecutor General's Office said, Hazy did hooliganism on August 29 at 12.30 at a bus stop in the village Jeyranbatan, when "without valid reason" he first cursed, and then hit on the head with a bottle a Baku resident Maharram Hasanov, and then struck him in the face, punching and with a foot, and so caused him a bodily injury.
Hazy was prosecuted under Article 221.3 (hooliganism committed with a weapon or object used as a weapon) of the Criminal Code and in respect of him the court chose a measure of arrest.
In turn, the lawyer for Hazy, Elton Guliyev told Turan that in fact the man came up to Hazy and began to make claims that the journalist does not respond to his appeal to him on Facebook.
Hazi said that probably he did not notice it on Facebook and he would again scan his profile and answer.
However, this man attacked Hazy and began to beat him. Hazy in self-defense hit him with a bottle and wanted to move away from the aggressive man, but police patrol officers "quickly" appeared and arrested him.
Guliyev said the arrest of Hazy was illegal because police did not substantiate the need for the detention, and, accordingly, the court also took an unjustified decision.
According to Guliyev, Hazy did not commit a crime, but only defended himself.
The decision to arrest will be appealed.
The newspaper Azadlig is convinced that Hazy faced a planned provocation and the journalist is prosecuted for publishing critical articles on the authorities in this edition, as well as on the On-line TV program Azerbaijani Hour, which he was leading.
It should be noted that in recent years on charges of hooliganism activists and journalists were convicted, including the leader of the National Statehood Party Nemat Panahli, the advisor to the Musavat Party chairman Yadigar Sadigov, the head of the NGO Educational Center Hasan Huseynli, the journalist Sardar Alibeili, etc.
On the same charges the authorities once convicted the journalist Ganimat Zahid and the bloggers Emin Milli and Adnan Hajizadeh. -0--
