Lavrov: Almost All Components of Karabakh Settlement Already on Table
Russia, as co-chair of the OSCE Minsk Group, intends to continue its initiatives to resolve the conflict, said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov after the trilateral meeting of the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan, Iran and Russia. Noting the importance of compliance with the truce reached, Lavrov at the same time stressed the need to accelerate the process of reaching a political agreement.
According to him, "almost all the components of the agreement are already on the table." The issue is not how to arrange them, but to clarify some wording," Lavrov said.
After meetings in Baku tomorrow he will meet with Armenia’s Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.
"Of course, we are interested, probably more than many other foreign partners, to settle the conflict as soon as possible,” the minister said.
In his opinion, in parallel with the negotiation process it is important to take confidence-building measures to prevent "similar outbreaks of violence." "It is not good when snipers look at one another every day and see the face of someone, who is on the other side of the line of contact. Their nerves may waver,” Lavrov said.
"We think that the current situation requires all of us to more actively agree to develop confidence-building measures on the line of contact. But I want to say straight away that confidence-building in the area of conflict does not mean that we have to relax, regarding the need to find a political comprehensive settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Lavrov said -06D--.
