Meeting at US Embassy with human rights lawyers
Baku/19.04.23/Turan: U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Azerbaijan Hugo Guevara met with human rights lawyers on April 18.
As stated in the message of the US Embassy, human rights issues were discussed during the meeting.
"The United States is proud to support the defenders of religious freedom, tolerance and fundamental freedoms," the message says.
The meeting was attended by lawyers: Elchin and Zibeida Sadigovs, Javad Javadov, Bahruz Bayramov, Agyl Laidj and Shahla Gumbatova.
"Mr. Guevara said that human rights are a priority issue for the United States, which always supports human rights defenders. The issue of political prisoners was also a topic of the discussion," lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan news agency.
The general opinion at the meeting was that there should be no political prisoners in the country, people should not be arrested for political reasons, courts should not authorize the arrests of people ordered by the executive. The independence of the courts must be ensured, Sadygov replied. -06B-
