MRI condemns pressure on opposition newspapers
Media Rights Institute (MRI) has condemned the ban on the sale of "Azadlig ", "Yeni Musavat", "Bizim Yol" and "Gundem Heber" newspapers near the Baku metro stations. The MRI is concerned about the discriminatory attitude to newspapers publishing critical articles.
Deprivation of the newspapers of income from sale actually causes their strangulation and a serious threat to freedom of expression.
These newspapers have been subject to pressure and attacks in recent years. Since 2012 their staff have been subjected to physical and psychological pressure because of journalism no less than 50 times. Neither of these facts were fairly investigated.
Senior officials filed dozens of lawsuits against "Azadlig" and "Yeni Musavat". These publications and their employees were fined more than 100,000 manat.
The MRI called on the government to stop the discriminatory attitude towards the opposition press and create a media distribution sector, not dependent on authorities. -16D-
