Negotiations of Heads of Frontier Departments of Azerbaijan and Iran
Baku / 05.12.17 / Turan: Within the framework of the official visit to Iran on December 2-4, the head of the State Border Service of Azerbaijan Elchin Guliyev held talks with the Commander of the Frontier Troops of Iran Gasym Rzayi and the Chief of the General Staff of Iran Muhammad Hussein Baghiri.
The State Border Service of Azerbaijan reports the heads of frontier departments of the two countries discussed the situation on the state border, at checkpoints, and in the Caspian Sea.
Issues of cooperation against threats to border security, including international terrorism, illicit drug trafficking, smuggling, and illegal migration were also considered.
A 132-km long area of the Azerbaijani-Iranian border remains outside the control of Azerbaijan because of the Armenian occupation, and this concern was brought to the Iranian side.
There was also an exchange of views on the issues of simplifying the procedures for the passage of goods and vehicles through the railway station Astara.
The parties noted the advisability of extending the operation of the Astara and Bilasuvar checkpoints to facilitate mutual visits of citizens of the two countries. -06D--
