New law on political parties may limit freedom of assembly - US Embassy
Baku/04.11.22/Turan: The bill "On Political Parties", which will soon be submitted for discussion by the Milli Mezhdlis, has provoked sharp criticism from lawyers, experts and the country's political parties themselves. The same is true of the international reaction to this document.
Turan agency asked the US Embassy to take position on this bill. The response received from the Press Secretary says: “We are concerned that the draft Law On Political Parties may further limit the freedom of association of Azerbaijanis by making it difficult to register political parties. We urge the Azerbaijani authorities to consult with international experts, including the OSCE/ODIHR and the Venice Commission of the Council of Europe, and take into account their feedback on the draft law. Respect for freedom of association is a fundamental freedom as ser forth in the Constitution of Azerbaijan and international obligations. We will continue to monitor this matter closely." -02B-
