November 17 - National Revival Day

November 17 in Azerbaijan is celebrated as the Day of National Revival.

On this day in 1988 in Baku on Lenin Square (now Azadlig) began an uninterrupted rally in protest against the inaction of the republican and federal authorities in connection with the violation of the sovereignty of Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh by separatists.

Hundreds of thousands of people for two weeks continuously demanded from Moscow to end the Armenian separatism in Karabakh.

On the night of 4 December 5, federal authorities carried out a punitive operation against the protesters, resulting in dozens of people injured and one killed.

Nevertheless, the meeting marked the beginning of a powerful movement that culminated in the October 1991 declaration of independence of Azerbaijan.

Since 1992, November 17 was celebrated as the Day of National Revival. Until the end of 2006, this day was a festive day off. However, in late 2006, Parliament removed it from the list of non-working days.

Despite such great importance of this day, the current authorities do not conduct any activities.

Rallies on Azadlig Square, symbolizing freedom for the people, have been banned for long. The square is only used for concerts. -05B06-
