November 9 - National Flag Day

Baku / 09.11.17 / Turan: On November 9 Azerbaijan celebrates the National Flag Day. On the occasion of the holiday it is a non-working day.

The tricolor flag with a crescent and eight-pointed star as a state symbol was approved on November 9, 1918 by the Azerbaijan People's Republic (1918-20). This flag operated until April 28, 1920, when Azerbaijan was occupied by Bolshevik Russia.

As a result of the national liberation struggle of the late 1980s and early 1990s, on February 5, 1991, the Supreme Soviet of Azerbaijan restored the tricolor flag as a symbol of the republic.

According to the decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, on November 17, 2009, every year November 9 in memory of the Azerbaijan People's Republic is celebrated as the National Flag Day.

In 2010, Flag Square was opened with a flagpole 162 meters high on the southwest coast of Baku Bay. The Flag Museum was also created there. -0-
