Opening Ceremony of Islamic Solidarity Games Held without Excessive Pomposity
Baku / 13.05.17 / Turan: The solemn opening of the IV Islamic Solidarity Games took place at the Olympic Stadium in Baku late on Friday. The program of the event reflected the history and culture of Islam and Azerbaijan and the modern life of the country.
The stadium scene was built in the style of Islamic architecture with two minarets 28 meters high.
Impressive was the performance of Ezan (call to prayer) from one of the minarets by the famous Azerbaijani Mugham singer Alim Gasimov. 65 thousand spectators were literally holding their breath, listening to this enchanting performance. Perhaps it was the brightest moment of the show.
The plot of the presentation was based on the journey of a little girl named Mina on a kite into the past and the present. She, according to the artistic director of the ceremony, Nathan M. Wright, gets acquainted with the originality and heritage of people, their beliefs and wishes. In conclusion, her hope for the future is expanding. "The history of Mina is the personification of the power and unity of people. Her desire is the best planet where peace and harmony reign. For more than a year now I have been feeling the kindness and sincerity of the Azerbaijani people, these qualities inspire me," the state news agency AzerTaj quotes Wright.
The girl's journey reflects the history, culture and scientific achievements of Azerbaijan and the Islamic world. On the stage were projected the ancient rock carvings of Gobustan, the Temple of Fire-worshipers and the eternal fire of Yanardagh in the vicinity of Baku. Before the eyes of the spectators were also pictures of an Oriental caravanserai, travelers, books of scholars of the Islamic world, monuments of Muslim architecture, and achievements of mankind in the era known as the Golden Century of Islam. All the performances were accompanied by works of classical music by Azerbaijani composers.
Compared with the European Games held two years ago, the current ceremony seemed much more modest. Although the organization attracted well-known foreign specialists, it did not involve the invitation of world-class stars, such as Lady Gaga. The stage design also looked more modest.
At the same time, the program contained a message about the creative essence of true Islam.
It should be noted that the participants of the ceremony were greeted by Mehriban Aliyeva, First Vice-President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and Chairman of the Baku-2017 Organizing Committee.
"Azerbaijan is happy to be a part of Islamic history and heritage and share Islamic values. The creative elements of these Games, ranging from medals that will be awarded to athletes who have won victories, to the grand opening and closing ceremonies, will inspire our rich culture. Today we have united the entire Islamic world. Azerbaijan is glad to take on this high mission," Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva said.
The Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Yusuf Al-Usaimin, expressed confidence that the Games will contribute to the promotion of sports in the countries - members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and will support youth in the Islamic world.
The ceremony ended with fireworks after midnight. -06D--
