OSCE will strengthen attention to the protection of human rights defenders
On June 10-11 a conference on "The OSCE and human rights activists" was held in Berne, Switzerland.
The event was opened by the OSCE Chairman, Swiss President Didier Burkhalter.
A member of the conference, the head of the Institute of Reporters Freedom and Safety (IRFS) Emin Huseynov said that the OSCE intends to adopt new protection of human rights defenders.
In particular, the OSCE presented a document regulating this issue in the OSCE participating States.
The document envisages measures to prevent human rights defenders from the pressure of governments, and government compliance with its international obligations.
Also raised was the question of arrest of journalists for criticizing the government in the OSCE countries.
CoE Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks and ODIHR Director Janez Lenarcic condemned politically motivated arrests in Europe, in particular, the prosecution of the human rights activist Anar Mammadli in Azerbaijan. -16D06-
