Paris accused Baku of supporting Caledonian separatists
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot on Saturday accused Azerbaijan of attempting to destabilize New Caledonia and other French overseas territories. In a statement on social media platform X, Barrot stated, "The 'Baku group' has once again sought to destabilize our national political life in New Caledonia. These futile attempts by Azerbaijan in our overseas territories are unacceptable and must stop immediately."
In response, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Aykhan Hajizadeh dismissed the allegations, asserting that the Baku Initiative Group aims to highlight France's colonial policies and the challenges faced by its overseas territories. Hajizadeh emphasized that the group is an NGO dedicated to bringing attention to these issues.
This exchange marks the latest development in escalating tensions between Paris and Baku. In May 2024, French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused Azerbaijan of interfering in unrest in New Caledonia, alleging that Azerbaijani entities had supported pro-independence activists. Azerbaijan denied these claims, maintaining that its involvement was limited to supporting anti-colonial movements.
The Baku Initiative Group was established in July 2023 after Azerbaijan hosted pro-independence activists from various French overseas territories, including Martinique, French Guiana, New Caledonia, and French Polynesia. The group's stated mission is to support "French liberation and anti-colonial movements."
Relations between France and Azerbaijan have been strained due to France's support for Armenia in its conflict with Azerbaijan, including military cooperation and arms deliveries. In response, Azerbaijan has launched media campaigns against France and detained multiple French nationals on charges of espionage and political affiliations.
The situation in New Caledonia remains tense, with ongoing debates over independence and allegations of foreign interference further complicating the political landscape.

ВВП на душу населения в Каледонии $35.000, в Азербайджане в 5 раз меньше - $7.000. Если они выйдут из состава Франции, их доходы упадут, что им не нужно. Никто не хочет жить на доходы в $7.000, если можно получать $35.000
