Peace treaty with Azerbaijan may not include Karabakh issue - Pashinyan
Baku/30.09.22/Turan: The peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan may not include the issue of Karabakh. Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this on Friday in an interview with Public TV.
“We expect that perhaps the issue of Nagorno-Karabakh will not be included in the peace treaty between Armenia and Azerbaijan. In Paris, during my speech, I noted that Armenia and Azerbaijan should mutually recognize each other's territorial integrity, and the main beneficiary in the negotiation process on Nagorno-Karabakh should be representatives elected by the people of Karabakh,” Pashinyan said. According to him, this issue was agreed with the leader of the Karabakh separatists Arayik Harutyunyan.
“Neither Moscow, nor Brussels, nor Washington are ready to recognize the independence of Karabakh and are not ready to recognize Karabakh as part of Armenia. We must recognize this fact,” the Prime Minister stressed.
Referring to the situation on the border, he said that Yerevan wants the mission of observers of the French Defense Ministry to work on a permanent basis.
Pashinyan considers it necessary to start substantive negotiations with Baku on a peace treaty. At a meeting in Geneva, the foreign ministers will begin "negotiations on the development of the text of the treaty," he said.
“At the heart of the treaty and peace should be the recognition of each other's territorial integrity. If Azerbaijan recognizes our territorial integrity, based on the agreement on the creation of the CIS of December 18, 1991, we are ready to move on to mutual recognition of territorial integrity. The negotiator on Nagorno-Karabakh can be Nagorno-Karabakh itself, so far Azerbaijan has not responded to this proposal,” he said.
“Azerbaijan is constantly making aggressive statements, trying to make territorial claims against Armenia between the lines. If it were not for this rhetoric, the agreement would have been signed long ago,” he said.
Referring to the corridor to Nakhchivan, Pashinyan said: “We also do not want an Armenian citizen to encounter Azerbaijani customs officers at the border, we propose to place specialized organizations on the border with the functions of customs and border services. In addition, when crossing the border, do not put a stamp in your passport,” Pashinyan said. -0-
