Pogrom of Nakhichevan elite gaining momentum, Finance Minister arrested
Baku/28.11.22/Turan: The Sabail district court of Baku, presided over by judge Ulviya Shukurova, on November 26 arrested Raphael Aliyev, Minister of Finance of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, for a period of 4 months during the investigation.
Sabail court informed Turan that the Minister was found guilty under Article 179.4 of the Criminal Code (embezzlement on a large scale).
Rafael Aliyev is accused of abuse of power and embezzlement of 144 million manats of state funds. Aliyev's lawyers and relatives have not yet commented on his arrest.
Last week, the State Security Service conducted an operation in the Nakhchivan customs committee, detaining the head of the agency's department, Mansur Askerov. On November 24, Sabail Court in Baku also arrested him for 4 months. He was accused of embezzling 132 million manats.
According to unofficial reports, 10 people were arrested in the Nakhchivan customs office. The State Security Service has not yet provided details on the progress and outcome of the operation against corrupt officials in Nakhchivan.
It is noteworthy that the arrests of state officials in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic are not made by a local court, but by the Sabail court in Baku.
According to observers, the main blow of the law enforcement agencies is directed against the "Nakhchivan khan" - Chairman of the Supreme Majlis of Nakhchivan Vasif Talibov. He is the only one who decides all issues in this autonomous region of Azerbaijan, and the arrests of such high-ranking officials cannot but affect him personally. Talybov's authoritarian rule has long been an object of international criticism for the complete absence of minimum civil rights and freedoms and total corruption.
Further arrests of high-ranking officials in the autonomy will be quite logical. -03-
