Situation in Azerbaijan to Be Discussed in Washington
Hearings on the situation in Azerbaijan will be held in Washington D.C. on January 12. The discussion entitled "Silencing independent voices in Azerbaijan" is organized by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED).
As noted in the statement on its website, unprecedented repression against opposition-minded people is taking place in Azerbaijan. Arrests of journalists, human rights defenders and activists create an atmosphere of fear. According to the document, this situation encourages the organizers to hold such an event and to discuss the current situation and the way out of it.
The hearings are expected to be addressed by speakers including University of Massachusetts Professor Audrey Altstadt, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Thomas Melia, head of the Azerbaijani service of Radio Liberty Kenan Kazymoglu, board member of the movement REAL Altai Goyushov, and NED Director of Russia and Eurasia Programs Miriam Lanskoy. -16D-

The U.S. Embassy hosted a reception to mark the 30th anniversary of the "Contract of the Century." Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and all Rus' presented the Order of St. Alexius, Metropolitan of Kyiv, Moscow, and all Rus', to Sheikh-ul-Islam Allahshukur Pashazade, Chairman of the Caucasus Muslims Office (CMO). The expansion of military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Türkiye was addressed during a meeting between the air force commanders of the two countries -Namig Islamzade and Ziya Cemal Kadioglu. During his visit to Türkiye, Islamzade also met with National Defense Minister Yasar Guler and Haluk Gorgun, Chairman of the Defense Industry Committee under the President's Administration.
