State Department: U.S. 'Pleased' With Progress On EU Observer Mission, Supports Steps Towards Peace In The South Caucasus
"We very much appreciate all EU President Charles Michel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and other European leaders have done to bring Azerbaijan and Armenia together for direct dialogue" a State Department spokesperson on Friday told TURAN's Washington correspondent when commenting on the meetings in Prague which were hosted by the European Political Community.
The U.S. supports the steps Armenia and Azerbaijan are taking towards reaching a sustainable peace agreement and the U.S. is committed to helping Armenia and Azerbaijan resolve issues peacefully, a spokesperson said.
In his turn, Vedant Patel, Department's principal deputy spokesperson, also told Friday's daily press briefing that Washington "welcomes" the efforts of President Macron and European Council President Michel to build momentum behind a comprehensive peace process.
"And we are particularly pleased with progress on an EU observer mission to the region, and this mission has the potential to build confidence between both sides and continues to bolster negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan" Patel said in response to TURAN's correspondent's question.
The United States also supports Turkey and Armenia’s efforts toward normalizing their relations, which will contribute to stability in the region, a State Department spokesperson told TURAN.
"The historic meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Pashinyan and Turkish President Erdogan in Prague was a significant milestone," a spokesperson concluded.
