The Court of Appeal has remanded Shamo Eminov in custody
On July 3, the Baku Court of Appeal dismissed a complaint against the extension of the arrest period by employees of the “Kanal-13” Internet television Shamo Eminov, his lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan. According to him, Eminov participated in the trial and protested the court's decision.
“Shamo Eminov stated that he was not guilty of anything and the investigation did not prove his guilt. Eminov said that he was being persecuted because of his professional journalistic activities," the lawyer said.
The head of “Kanal-13”, Aziz Orujev and Shamo Eminov, were arrested in November-December 2023 on charges of smuggling currency as part of an organized group. Both deny the charges, considering their journalistic activities to be the true reason for the arrest.
“Reporters Without Borders”, Amnesty International, the European Federation of Journalists and a number of other local and international human rights organizations, as well as the EU Special Representative for Human Rights, PACE speakers called on Baku to stop pressure on independent media and release the arrested journalists.
On June 27, the court extended their arrest for another three months.
