The family of the journalist arrested in Tbilisi is seeking asylum in embassies
The family of Afgan Sadigov, the founder of the “Azel.TV” website arrested in Tbilisi, has applied to the UN mission and the French Embassy for asylum and asks them to take them to a third country. The wife of the journalist Sevinj Sadigova asked the Ombudsman of Georgia for assistance in this matter, Sadigova herself told Turan agency. Earlier, the family requested protection from the Norwegian and British embassies in Georgia.
"Me and my two children live under threats in Tbilisi. There are a lot of suspicious people around the house, the owner of the apartment also wants us to vacate the apartment," Sadigova said.
Afgan Sadigov was detained in Tbilisi on August 3 at the request of the Azerbaijani Prosecutor's Office. On August 4, the court arrested him for two months for extradition to Azerbaijan, where a criminal case was launched against him on charges of extortion.
Sadigov denies the accusation and believes that a criminal case has been fabricated against him in order to punish him for criticizing the authorities. Sadigov had previously been involved in criminal cases in Azerbaijan twice and was sentenced to prison terms. However, both times human rights activists recognized him as a political prisoner.
