The new president of PACE is the Italian Michele Nicoletti
Strasbourg/22.01.18/Turan: The PACE winter session that opened today elected a 61-year-old Italian parliamentarian Michele Nicoletti a new president of PACE, the special correspondent of Turan reported from Strasbourg. Nicoletti has been PACE member since 2013, is the head of the Italian delegation to PACE and a group of socialists. During the session, under the slogan: "Conflicts and their humanitarian consequences," will be discussed conflicts in Europe, the problems of people suffering in crisis zones, the process of peaceful settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, the growth of anti-Semitism in Europe, the role of the Council of Europe in combating Islamophobia and xenophobia.
On January 24, the Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan will address the session. In addition, the focus of the PACE deputies will be threats and challenges to press freedom and the Internet in Europe, combating calls for hatred in the on-line environment. Attention will also be paid to improving monitoring mechanisms in the member countries of the Council of Europe. -16D-

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) today issued five rulings on applications from Azerbaijan. The case of "Afgan Mammadov v. Azerbaijan" concerned the complainant's exclusion from the Bar Association. Mammadov was expelled based on a complaint filed by a colleague, which he considered unjust. The ECHR ruled that Mammadov's rights had been violated and ordered Azerbaijan to pay him €5,000 in compensation for moral damage and €1,000 to cover legal costs.

During the ongoing COP29 climate conference in Baku on November 14, a group of activists staged a protest condemning Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The activists also denounced countries that supply oil and weapons to nations waging aggressive wars. The protest featured placards with slogans such as: "From fossil fuels to peace!", "End war crimes!", "Punish the aggressor!", and "Phase out fossil fuel use to achieve peace!" among others.
