The U.S. Congress will discuss the situation in Azerbaijan
During his visit to the United States on 14-23 November, the former presidential candidate of the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), Jamil Hasanli, informed the American establishment on the Karabakh conflict, the situation in the region, the problems with democracy and human rights in Azerbaijan.
In particular, Hasanli spoke about the falsification of election process, political prisoners, and restrictions on freedom of speech.
Hasanli said, at a press conference on November 27 at the Media Center, that he had discussed all these issues at the meetings with officials, experts and civil society activists of the United States.
During the meeting with the congressional representatives, members of the group "Tom Lantos" discussed the problems of political prisoners and the pressure on journalists. Next week, the group will raise this issue in Congress.
At a meeting with David Kramer, the head of the human rights organization Freedom House, questions regarding Azerbaijan's fulfillment of its obligations in the field of human rights were discussed. This organization applies sanctions according to Magnitsky’s list to Azerbaijani officials who violate human rights.
Hasanli focused attention on the arrests of the leader of "REAL" Movement, Ilgar Mamedov, deputy chairman of "Musavat," Tofig Yagublu, activists of NIDA, journalists, bloggers and believers.
Hasanli also met with Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights Thomas Melia and others. -03C06-
