Thorbjørn Jagland Writes to Ali Insanov
Baku / 24.10.17 / Turan: Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjorn Jagland sent a letter to the ex-Minister of Health Ali Insanov, imprisoned in Azerbaijan, in response to his appeals to this organization about the failure to comply with the Strasbourg Court"s verdict. Turan News Agency was informed about this by Insanov"s lawyer Togrul Babayev.
Jagland assures that Insanov"s case is constantly in the focus of attention of the Council of Europe. The ECHR Department for Enforcement of Decisions carries out consistent work to implement the Strasbourg Court"s decision in the Insanov case and informs the Secretary General of the organization about it.
Jagland also notes that Insanov"s second complaint has been also accepted in the ECHR"s proceedings.
Insanov was arrested in October 2005 on charges of attempting a coup. Subsequently, he was sentenced to 11 years of imprisonment for economic crimes.
In October 2016, 56 days before the end of the imprisonment term, new charges against him were filed, regarding the possession of drugs and resistance to the representative of power. In April 2016 the Garadagh court deprived him of freedom for 7 years, and the Court of Appeal upheld the sentence.
On March 14, 2013, the European Court ruled on the unfair condemnation of Insanov in the first case. But in the course of the second trial, the verdict was upheld. -03B-
