Georgian Foreign Minister Maya Panjikidze expressed a hope that soon amendments to the law "On repatriation of IDPs from the Georgian SSR by the authorities of the former Soviet Union in the 40's of the 20th century" will be developed soon.
According to the law, which was adopted by the Georgian Parliament in July 2007, the persons deported from Georgia, received the right to repatriation and returnee status.
"At this stage we are working on about 900 cases. Ministry of Justice is working on the amendments to the law on the subject. Since the new government of Georgia has finally decided to settle the matter, I hope that these changes will be made soon," said Panjikidze.
According to her, only about 5,000 applications were received from the Meskhetian Turks.
"Meskhetian Turks were expelled from the country (Georgia) due to the socialist regime. This is their land, and Turkey wants to contribute to the resolution of this issue," said Davutoglu.
Georgia, joining the Council of Europe, has pledged to repatriate Meskhetian Turks living in Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Ukraine, and Azerbaijan.
