UN Assessment Mission on visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan
Baku/10.10.23/Turan: On October 5, the UN Mission for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs completed a week-long mission to Azerbaijan and Armenia to identify the urgent needs of people in the Karabakh region, as well as refugees in Armenia.
As stated in the UN press release, the mission was headed by coordination director Ramesh Rajasingham, accompanied by the UN Permanent Coordinator Vladanka Andreyeva and representatives of UN agencies in Karabakh.
Since October 1, the mission has visited urban areas, finding a small number of residents. Most of them were waiting for a bus to leave the region.
Note that civilian infrastructure and houses such as schools, the main hospital and residential buildings remained untouched. During this trip, the mission did not visit the countryside, this will happen in the coming days and weeks.
The team also headed to the border with Armenia through the Lachin corridor. In Armenia, the UN team met with government officials and civil society, as well as refugees from Karabakh.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, together with UN agencies and partner NGOs, appealed for 97 million US dollars to provide assistance to 231,000 people. These are the refugees themselves and the local communities supporting them in Armenia, the press release says. -0-
