UN Offers Azerbaijan and Armenia Help in Solving IDP Problems
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed its readiness to provide assistance to several hundred people who became refugees as a result of the recent clashes in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
"The UNHCR called on all the parties to protect these people and ensure respect for their rights. Most of these displaced persons have fled from villages in the north-eastern part of Nagorno-Karabakh," said the press secretary of the UN at a briefing in New York.
The UNHCR fears the resumption of hostilities, which have already led to the deaths of dozens of people and new displacement of civilians. Many of them had to move several times over the past two decades.
The UNHCR received reports of civilian casualties, destruction of houses and infrastructure, as well as restrictions on the movement of those who are trying to get out of the conflict zone.
The UN suggested to the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan to assist in meeting the humanitarian needs of the newly displaced persons and called on the authorities to ensure access to those in need. -02D-
