UN Working Group on Arbitrary Arrests Coming to Azerbaijan

The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Arrests will first examine the situation in the prisons of Azerbaijan in the period 16-25 May.

According to the United Nations in Baku representation, within the 10-day visit the head of the group Sètondji Roland Adjovi from Benin and his deputy for communications José Guevara from Mexico will hold meetings in Baku, Ganja and Nakhchivan with officials, civil society representatives and other parties.

The experts will visit the places of serving the sentence, police stations and psychiatric hospitals, and meet with the people deprived of their liberty, as well as members of their families to gather first-hand information.

The group will be accompanied by members of the secretariat of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

On the primary observations of the Working Group a press conference will be held at the UN office on 25 May at 15:00.

The final report will be presented at the UN Human Rights Council in September 2017.

The working group also includes Lee Toomey (Australia), Seong-Phil Hong (South Korea) and Vladimir Tochilovski (Ukraine).
