US Embassy urges Azerbaijani government to respect citizens' constitutional rights
Baku/04.11.22/Turan: The US Embassy in Azerbaijan expressed concern about the obstacles to peaceful assemblies.
“We remain concerned about pressure on citizens exercising their constitutional rights in Azerbaijan. We call on the government to respect the rights of its citizens, including the right to peaceful assembly,” said US Embassy spokeswoman Alys Spensley, answering a question from Turan about the authorities blocking the constitutional rights of citizens to hold street rallies.
In recent years, the authorities have imposed a ban on street protests by opposition and civil groups, in defiance of the First Article of the Azerbaijani Constitution and the law on freedom of assembly. Such actions are severely suppressed by the police and usually end with the arrests of activists, in particular, this took place on October 24, when the police severely suppressed a protest rally of the Popular Front Party in front of the Baku City Hall.—0—
