US Senator Called on President Ilham Aliyev to Condemn Closure of Radio Azadlig
Senator Robert Menendez, a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Senate, sent a letter to President Ilham Aliyev, which condemns censorship in the media as part of a campaign against civil society by the government of Azerbaijan.
In his letter Senator Menendez said that repression in Azerbaijan in relation to the media, civil society and all forms of non-violent political dissent will be a serious obstacle to the development of bilateral relations between the US and Azerbaijan.
The Senator urged the Azerbaijani President to condemn the closure of the Radio Liberty office in Azerbaijan on 26 December 2014 and allow employees to resume regular journalistic activities.
In addition, the Senator called for the release of the journalist Khadija Ismailova and the human rights advocate Leyla Yunus, as well as other political prisoners in Azerbaijan. -02D-
