Today Ilham Aliyev received the Rapporteur of the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights of PACE Alain Destexhe, the website of the head of state.
Aliyev noted that the relations between the Council of Europe and Azerbaijan continue for more than 15 years and maintained close cooperation with the various Council of Europe bodies. According to Aliyev, the country has made important steps towards democratization, conducted reforms to diversify the economy. Destexhe ‘s activity causes critique of local human rights defenders.
Members of the working group for drawing up a single list of political prisoners in January appealed to the PACE to appoint new rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan.
They pointed out that the Belgian MP Alain Destexhe appointed on 7 March, 2016 to assess the situation with human rights in Azerbaijan, did not work on its mandate, he shied away from cooperation with civil society representatives and human rights defenders, and did not come into the country in the framework of the mandate.
