Witness avoids giving evidence at Xilal Mammadov"s trial

The hearing of case of Xilal Mammadov, editor of Tolyshi Sado (Voice of Talysh) newspaper, has been postponed again at the Baku's grave crimes court, because of absence of a witness.

The witness were supposed to give evidence on July 10, but one of them Aziz Agakishiyev died in December 2012. The second witness Ulfat Abbasov failed to appear in court. The court hearing was postponed for July 17, 2013, but he failed to come again and the judge ordered to bring him to court by force.

Today the judge Azer Orujev said that police failed to bring the witness to court, because he is currently in Novosibirsk, Russia.

Mammadov has petitioned to investigate cause of death of Agakishiyev and Abbasov's leaving.

Mammadov does not rule out that Agakishiyev was killed and Abbasov was forced to leave the country. "They did not want to give false evidence against me," Mammadov said.

Lawyer Ramiz Mammadov has again petitioned to call Jeihun Kerimov, investigator of the Nizami district police department, as a witness. The defense would like to ask him questions about violations during search in the apartment of Mammadov and the witnesses.

The second lawyer Javad Javadly has petitioned to conduct dactyloscopic  examination to identify those who touched packages with drugs allegedly found at Mammadov's apartment.

The judge said that the petitions will be considered at the next hearing on July 31, 2013.

* Xilal Mammadov was arrested on June 21, 2012 on charge of illegal storage of drugs, high treason and stirring up of national hatred. Local and international organizations, however, believe that Mammadov is prosecuted on political motives.-0-
