Rasul Jafarov remains optimistic
It has been 8 months since the arrest of human rights activist Rasul Jafarov, coordinator of the campaign “Art for Democracy.” The trial in the case of Jafarov held in the Baku Serious Crimes Court has been lasting for several weeks, but so far none of the witnesses gave evidence against him. Rasul Jafarov answered questions of the radio "Voice of America" through his lawyer. He said he feels good, and did not complain about the conditions of detention and attitude. Human rights activist did not complain about the attitude of the prisoners administration prison.
Concerning the, Jafarov said that he things of possibility of changing the measure of restraint on house arrest. "I'm waiting for the final verdict, hope on its validity, although the current practice is not happy," said Jafarov.
Asking the question how his stay in prison influenced his life, Jafarov said that life in prison is interesting in terms of experience in the new situation. "Here I am thinking more about the family, my 85-year-old grandfather, 50-year-old mother, friends, and think about their problems. I amalso concerned about the stop of my activity which is so important to the state and society. My activities are not directed against someone or against some sturkture. My activity was only in the protection of human rights," said Jafarov.
He thanked all those who support him, highlighting the meeting with PACE co-rapporteurs, although relevant to their activities ambiguous. Under the charges against him, Jafarov may be sentenced to 12 years in prison.
*Jafarov was arrested on 2 August, 2014 on charges of illegal business activities and abuse, and later he was charged with negligence and misappropriation of funds. Organization Amnesty recognsed Rasul Jafarov as prisoner of conscience. -03В-
