A Number of Azerbaijani Media Regularly Violate Presumption of Innocence - Report
Baku / 05/15/19 / Turan: The investigation team of the Institute for Democratic Initiatives (IDI) distributed a report on statistics and analysis of violations of the presumption of innocence in Azerbaijan in 2018.
The report was compiled on the basis of the monitoring of media websites: Trend.az, Qafqazinfo.az, Musavat.com, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs - Mia.gov.az.
The criteria for presumption of innocence were preliminarily determined on the basis of the norms of national and international legislation, as well as the case-law decisions of the ECHR and in particular the inadmissibility of representing someone as a criminal without a court order.
5,104 violations of presumption of innocence were revealed on 4 sites during the review period. Most of all - 1,376 facts were recorded on the website Qafqazinfo.az. 1,340 cases of violations were noted on Trend.az, and 1,309 on Musavat.com.
Least of all violations - 1,079 were recorded on the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
Although the three media bodies averaged 1,341 times referred to the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, there were 1,309 violations on the resource of this structure.
"This indicates that the media spread messages with a distortion of the original source," the document says.
The media and the Ministry of the Interior indicated in the report have not yet responded to the report.
* The Institute for Democratic Initiatives (IDI) NGO was established on November 5, 2013 by a group of lawyers and public activists with the aim of promoting an open society in Azerbaijan through democratic initiatives.
