Activist of "NIDA" youth movement detained
Baku/22.06.23/Turan: Elmir Abbasov, an activist of the "NIDA" youth movement, was detained on the evening of June 21.
"According to information from Elmir's relatives, yesterday at about 10 p.m. he called his mother and said that he was coming home, did he need to buy anything at the market? However, he did not return home and stopped contacting. Today it became known that Elmir was detained," Turan was told in "NIDA".
The press service of the Interior Ministry of Azerbaijan confirmed the detention of Abbasov to Turan.
"Elmir Abbasov has been detained in connection with violation of public order, an investigation is underway," the Ministry said.
However, his colleagues believe that Abbasov was detained because of the harsh criticism of the police on Facebook.
"Elmir published a post in which he sharply criticized the use of violence by the police against the residents of the village of Seyudlu of the Gedabey region during the protest action on June 20," a representative of the movement said.
Abbasov had been arrested before.
In February 2021, he was arrested for 30 days on charges of illegal use of narcotic substances. Oppositionists then linked his arrest with criticism of the authorities. -21D06-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
