Barama Innovation and Entrepreneurship Center of Azercell Telekom LLC continuesits successful activity. Two projects of the Center have received “Azerbaijan Women in IT Award — AWITA 2017” by “Femmes Digitales — Azerbaijani Women in IT Club” (AWIC). Launched for the first time in Azerbaijan, the award went to “TechSos” project developed by AytajAghabeyli and Gunay Abdullayeva in the nomination of “Startup of the year” and “WowomanTechTechkhanim” project in the nomination of “IT group of the year/IT education program/IT educational project”.
The award ceremony in 15 categories took place in International Mugham Center. The winners were selected by the judging panel comprised of the experts from various public agencies, ICT companies, universities and media outlets.
The Women in IT Awards is Azerbaijan’s largest event dedicated to tackling gender imbalance in IT industry. It does this by showcasing the achievements and innovation of women in technology, identifying new role models and promoting further dialogue around diversity among industry influencers.
Azerbaijan Women in ICT Club – FEMMES DIGITALES was established in 2014 with a goal to bring together women working inICT sphere at public and privatecompanies, as well non-governmental organizations to increase their professional participation and support their career development efforts in this rapidly developing industry.

The leader of the mobile communication industry of Azerbaijan and the biggest investor in the non-oil sector Azercell Telecom LLC was founded in 1996. With 48% share of Azerbaijan’s mobile market Azercell’s network covers 80% of the territory and 99,8% of population of the country. Currently, 4,5 million subscribers choose Azercell services. On December 25, an Embraer 190 passenger plane operated by Azerbaijan Airlines CJSC (AZAL), on a Baku–Grozny flight, crashed near the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. Azerbaijan’s Consul General in Aktau, Ayxan Suleymanlı, stated that the plane had 67 people onboard, including crew members, 38 of whom died. According to him, 26 of the deceased were Azerbaijani citizens.
