Another Lawyer Deprived of Authority
Baku / 28.11.10 / Turan: The powers of lawyer Shahla Humbatova have been suspended. This was reported to Turan by the head of the staff of the Bar Association, Farhad Najafov.
According to him, the decision was made at a meeting of the Presidium of the Bar on November 28 in connection with Humbatova’s “errors” in advocacy.
In particular, the Bar received a complaint from a citizen that Humbatova submitted a “fake document” to the court in his case, which is a “violation of the law on attorneys and advocacy”.
In addition, according to Najafov, Humbatova has not paid membership dues for more than 6 months.
On this basis, the Bar of lawyers appealed to the court to terminate the powers of Humbatova.
Humbatova herself has not yet been able to give comments. She is known for her human rights affairs. So, she defended the rights of a number of political prisoners, including the well-known human rights activist Intigam Aliyev.
She also took part in trials, defending the rights of activists arrested in administrative cases.
So far, about 10 lawyers who defended the opposition and spoke at trials on violations of the rights of citizens have been deprived of their powers for far-fetched reasons. —21B06-

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
