Appeal from Giyas Ibrahim Scheduled for December 13
A preliminary hearing on the appeal against the sentence on the young activist Giyas Ibrahim has been appointed in Baku Appeal Court on December 13.
The case will be considered by judges chaired by Vugar Mammadov, the lawyer Elchin Sadigov said. According to him, the defense will insist on acquittal.
On October 25 Baku Court of Grave Crimes sentenced Ibrahim to 10 years in prison on charges of drug trafficking on a large scale. The sentence has been condemned by many international human rights organizations, which called the charges trumped.
In several countries, civil society activists have held peace rallies in support of Ibrahim.
Recall that Giyas Ibrahim and Bayram Mammadov were arrested on May 10 on charges of drug trafficking. However, the true reason for their arrest was the graffiti on the monument to Heydar Aliyev: "Congratulations on Slavery Day!" and "Down with the System!". Amnesty International has recognized the activists "prisoners of conscience". The trial of Mammadov continues. --06B-
