Appeals Court in Baku Leaves Mammad Ibrahim in Custody

The Baku Appeals Court today rejected the complaint from the advisor to the Chairman of the Popular Front Party (PFPA), Mammad Ibrahim, about his arrest for two months.

Turan was told by the lawyer Yalchin Imanov. According to him, there are no grounds for arresting and bringing Ibrahim to trial on charges of hooliganism.

According to the lawyer, Ibrahim is persecuted for political reasons because of his opposition activities. Next week the defense will file a request to replace the arrest by house arrest.

Ibrahim was arrested on September 30 by the Narimanov District Police Office as a suspect under article 221.1 (hooliganism). On October 1, he was charged under the article providing for imprisonment for up to 1 year.

On October 3 the Narimanov District Court arrested him for 2 months.

The reason for attracting the man to criminal liability was the complaint from Mikail Guliyev, who left the party along with the former PFPA Deputy Chairman Razi Nurullayev.

During the conflict between Ibrahim and Guliyev on September 29, the latter had his shirt torn.

The PFPA believes that a provocation is committed against Ibrahim to discredit and weaken the party. -06B-
