Azerbaijan Braces for Cold, Stormy Weather as Authorities Warn of Safety Risks

Azerbaijan is set to experience a sharp drop in temperatures, with stormy and snowy conditions expected across the country in the coming days, the National Hydrometeorology Service said on Monday. The forecast warns of intense precipitation in some areas, snowfall in mountainous and foothill regions, icy roads, and strong winds.

In response, the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) has urged residents to adhere strictly to safety precautions, warning of potential risks associated with increased use of heating devices, power overloads, and gas leaks.

"The cold and wet weather will lead to a surge in the use of gas and electric heaters, which may result in overloaded power grids and, in some cases, fires or explosions caused by faulty, substandard, or makeshift heating devices. There is also a heightened risk of carbon monoxide poisoning," the ministry said in a statement.

Authorities advised against using defective heating appliances, overloading electrical systems, or leaving heaters unattended. Flammable materials should be kept away from heat sources, and factory-installed safety guidelines should be followed.

For residents in mountainous areas, as well as those traveling to such regions, officials urged caution, recommending that people monitor official weather updates, avoid unnecessary travel during heavy snow and blizzards, and inform relatives of their travel plans if departure is necessary. Motorists were advised to check their vehicle’s winter readiness and ensure sufficient fuel supplies.

The ministry also warned against approaching unfamiliar terrain, ignoring hazard signs, and lingering near avalanche-prone slopes or steep inclines. Travelers were urged to return to settlements before nightfall.

In addition, officials cautioned against walking near temporary structures, billboards, or tall trees during strong winds and warned of potential difficulties in fire containment due to gusty conditions. Residents were reminded to follow fire safety rules carefully.

“Neglecting these precautions can pose serious risks to lives,” the statement read, urging the public to report emergencies by dialing 112.
