Baku/27.10.23/Turan: Azerbaijan leads the world in the number of selective abortions, the head of the Baku office of the UN Population Fund, Farid Babayev stated at a public hearing in the Milli Majlis on the topic: ”Improving legislation on the rights of women and children: the current situation and new challenges.“
According to him, Azerbaijan has already overtaken China in the number of selective abortions since 2021, which has been leading the world in this indicator for many years.
If this negative trend does not change, then in 2050 the country will face certain problems.
"It is necessary to educate society and make certain changes to the legislation,” Babayev said.
According to the report of the State Committee of Azerbaijan on Family, Women and Children: “On ensuring gender equality (men and women)” in 2022, out of 122,846 born in the country, 64,940 were boys, and 57,906 were girls. The difference between the sexes was 7,034 people.
During 2022, the number of registered abortions was 31,747, and in 2021 - 46,877. ---06B---
