On July 19, members of the Mountaineering Federation of Azerbaijan Ismail Askerov and Rufat Gojayev made a successful ascent to the peak of Pamir, Abu Ibn Sina, (formerly Lenin Peak), the height of 7134m.
The expedition was dedicated to the memory of outstanding Azerbaijani statesman, founder of the Karabakh khanate, Panah Khan, Turan was by the president of the Federation, sport master Israfil Ashurly.
The expedition was organized by the Ministry of Youth and Sport of Azerbaijan Republic, and the National Federation of mountaineering with the support of Heydar Aliyev Foundation.
On July 7 climbers arrived at base camp at an altitude of 3600 meters. Acclimatization and installation of high-altitude camps took more than a week. A camp was established at an altitude of 6000 meters.
Climbing was hampered by a fallen snow at a height, beginning from 5,000 meters. On the day of climbing the weather was not favorable and was unstable. Thus, on June 18 climbers went to the camp, planning to begin the assault early in the morning.
However, strong wind and fog delayed the climbing for a few hours. Despite the bad weather and limited time, Ismail Askerov decided to start assault.
Punching the road knee-deep in snow, climbers moved to the top and reached it at about 16:00, raising the national flag over the top of Azerbaijan.
By the nightfall athletes successfully returned to base camp, and are there now. The health of sportsmen is good.

Mountaineering Federation has made seven expeditions to this peak during different year. Last year's expedition was the most significant, since the route was more difficult , from the north, which over the past 15 years has been passed only once.
That mission was dedicated to the memory of outstanding Azerbaijani composer and journalist Uzeyir Hajibeyli.
The expedition this year was of a preparatory nature, and took place on the eve of the three high-altitude expeditions to more higher peaks of the Pamir and Tien Shan, which will be held in August.
