B. Mammadov’s Appeal Appointed on January 18
A preliminary hearing on the appeal against the sentence on the NIDA activist Bayram Mammadov is scheduled in Baku Appeal Court on January 18. The matter will be considered under the chairmanship of Judge Hasan Ahmadov, the lawyer Elchin Sadigov told Turan.
According to him, the defense will ask to stop the prosecution of the activist on the justificatory grounds. "This verdict is illegal and unfounded. Bayram did not commit the alleged crimes related to drug trafficking. He is persecuted for writing slogans on a monument," said Sadigov.
The activist of the movement NİDA Bayram Mammadov by the December 8 decision of the Baku Court of Grave Crimes was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Bayram Mammadov and Giyas Ibrahimov were arrested after political slogans written on the monument to Heydar Aliyev. However, they were accused of drug trafficking on a large scale.
Amnesty International recognized them as prisoners of conscience. Earlier Ibrahimov was also sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. -05B06 ---
