Baku / 29.01 / 18 / Turan: Jeremy McBride, the British lawyer of Ilgar Mammadov, the leader of the REAL Movement, appealed to the state bodies of Azerbaijan with a request to create conditions for communication with his client. In particular, he asks to allow him to either meet with Mamed, or talk over Skype to discuss issues related to the Mammadov"s case at the European Court of Human Rights. The appeal was sent on January 28 to the presidential administration, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Justice by regular mail and by e-mail. The British lawyer joined the defense of Mammadov at the end of last year.
Ilgar Mammadov was arrested on charges of organizing the riots in Ismayilli city in January 2013 in 2014, and sentenced to 7 years imprisonment.
In 2014 the ECHR said that Mammadov was arrested without evidence, and the main purpose of his imprisonment is to punish criticism of the government. Following Baku's refusal to comply with ECHR decisions, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, in accordance with article 46, paragraph 4 (compulsory execution of ECHR judgments), the Convention began a special procedure against Azerbaijan and referred the matter to the ECHR's Grand Chamber.
If the Grand Chamber recognizes Azerbaijan guilty of refusing to comply with the ECHR decision, the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe will consider the issue of sanctions against Azerbaijan. -016D06-
