Brother-in-law of Expatriate Opposition Activist Arrested

Baku / 17.11.17 / Turan: Emin Shaghiyev has been arrested on charges of illegal drug trafficking. He is a brother-in-law of Turkel Azerturk, presenter of Turan TV, the leading satellite TV channel of Azerbaijani emigrants in Europe.

As Azerturk himself reported, Shaghiyev was visited by employees of the Main Directorate for Combating Organized Crime of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. He was told that "he passed information from here to relatives abroad" and taken away.

Shaghiyev is charged under Article 234.4.3 (illegal drug trafficking in large amounts) of the Criminal Code, which provides for imprisonment from 5 to 12 years.

By the decision of the Narimanov District Court, a preventive measure was imposed on him in the form of arrest for a period of 4 months.

Azerturk linked the arrest of his brother-in-law with his opposition political views and journalistic work.

The arrest of Shaghiyev was confirmed in the Narimanov District Court.

Azerturk is currently in exile in the Netherlands, working with expatriate Turan TV. In the spring of this year, the Turan TV website was blocked on the territory of Azerbaijan. -06D--
