Committee to Protect Yunus Demands Her Release
The Committee to Protect the Rights of Leyla Yunus and other political prisoners strongly condemned the extension of detention of the human rights defender and other lawlessness against her. In a statement, the Committee indicated th exceptional services of Yunus in the development of civil society and the release of a large number of political prisoners.
At the same time, it recalls that the European Court of Human Rights considers the application from Yunus in a priority order.
The statement also points to the illegal arrest of Yunus’s husband, the scientist and public figure Arif Yunus.
"In the 21st century the syndrome of Stalinist repression is revived in Azerbaijan," the statement says.
Yunus was arrested July 30 on charges of high treason and economic crimes. On February 18 her arrest was extended for another 5 months. Yunus denies the charges and says they are politically motivated. Amnesty International has recognized Yunus "prisoner of conscience". -16D-
