Conditions of detention of Bakhtiyar Hajiyev have been tightened – lawyer
Baku/28.02.23/Turan: Physical and psychological state of the activist Bakhtiar Hajiyev, who is on the 51st day of hunger strike in a medical institution of the Penitentiary Service, is very serious, a lawyer Fahraddin Mehdiyev, who visited the activist, told Turan. "Bahtiyar's state remains very serious. Today his blood pressure has dropped to 85/55. His weight is 63.7 kilograms (when he was admitted to the isolation unit, he weighed 84.5 kg). He has severe dizziness and insomnia," the lawyer said.
According to the lawyer, Bakhtiyar Hajiyev wants to be transferred to a civilian hospital. Through his other lawyer, Shahla Humbatova, he sent an application to the Penitentiary Service for transfer to a civilian hospital. However, there is no positive answer.
In addition, Bakhtiyar agreed to be given an infusion (intravenous infusion of nutrients) by Professor Adil Geybulla, but after that the professor is not allowed to see Bakhtiyar.
Finally, the conditions of detention of the activist are very bad, he is under constant psychological pressure. The room where he is kept is narrow, there is no ventilation and lighting in it. The supervisor is constantly nearby and it is impossible to move. They made the situation worse for him, said Fakhreddin Mehdiyev.
It was not possible to get a comment from the Penitentiary Service on this matter.
* Bakhtiyar Hajiyev was arrested on December 9 last year on charges of hooliganism and contempt of court. On the same day, the Khatai District Court arrested him for 1 month and 20 days.
On December 15, Hajiyev went on a hunger strike demanding his release. He stopped his hunger strike on December 28 after persistent calls from members of the public and family members. But on January 9, after the Court of Appeal refused to release him from custody, he resumed his hunger strike, which continues to this day.
On January 21, the court extended Hajiyev's term of imprisonment for another month, and on February 23, the Khatai court extended the term of arrest for another 2 months – on April 28.
The courts did not satisfy numerous petitions of lawyers to change Hajiyev's extreme measure of restraint to house arrest or release on bail before the start of the judicial investigation. ---03B---

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
