Conference in Nakhchivan on the fight against trafficking
An international conference dedicated to the human trafficking day marked on July 30th took place in Nakhchivan, according to the Interior Ministry of Azerbaijan. The event was organized by the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Azerbaijan, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the US Agency for International Development (USAID).
The head of mission USAID Michaela Meredis noted the cooperation of the United States and Azerbaijan in the fight against trafficking. According to her, in spite of the achievements in this area, there are still unsolved problems. Traffickers are still shying away from the responsibility.
USAID jointly with IOM has been realizing since October 2015 the "Combating Trafficking in Human Beings" project. The project has created shelters for victims and assist them.
Victims of human trafficking are providing the legal, social, psychological and rehabilitative support. It is also planned to expand the capacity of health workers to assist victims.
Meredis positively assessed the decision by Azerbaijan National Action Plan to Combat Human Trafficking for 2014-2018.
The UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Gulam Isakzai said that at present the number of trafficking victims in the world is 20 million people. And the announcement on July 30 Day of the fight against trafficking was intended to draw international attention to this problem. The event was named trafficking slavery of the modern era. The conference continued its work by paneled discussions, which were attended by representatives of law enforcement and security agencies of Azerbaijan, including the autonomous republic. -06D--

Baku, often called the "Caucasian Dubai," is increasingly known for systematic violations of residents' housing rights. During urban renovations and the construction of elegant new buildings, thousands of families in Azerbaijan’s capital have been unlawfully deprived of their homes. Many, recognizing the futility of resistance, settle for inadequate monetary compensation for their irreplaceable property. A minority, placing faith in the Housing Code, demand fair compensation from construction companies but often lose everything—both their homes and any form of recompense.
