Court upholds Cavid Huseynov in custody
On 27 August the Sabail court rejected a petition to change the measure of restraint to Cavid Huseynov, the former captain of the football club "Gabala", on house arrest. According to the lawyer Adam Mammadov, the court upheld Cavid Huseynov under arrest in prison of Kurdakhani. The athlete was arrested after the death of the journalist Rasim Aliyev, who was beaten by relatives and friends of footballer. The incident occurred on the evening of August 8 in the village of Bailov. Journalist was hospitalized with multiple injuries, and the following day died from internal bleeding. Baku Prosecutor's Office filed a lawsuit under the Article 126.3 (deliberate infliction of grievous injury that caused the death.) Six people were arrested on the matter. -16D04-

On January 29, municipal elections were held in Azerbaijan, with over 16,000 candidates participating across 118 constituencies. The Central Election Commission (CEC) has already announced the names of the leading candidates on its website. Hours after the election, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov stated at a briefing that 413 out of 685 municipalities had already been formed, with 7,791 candidates identified as leaders. According to him, elections proceeded normally in all constituencies, and no complaints were received by his office. However, independent candidates and experts claim that there were violations during the election process.

The arrest was first reported by Kommersant and Izvestia, citing sources, and later corroborated by law enforcement contacts through RIA Novosti and TASS.
