European Court of Human Rights Begins Communicating on Complaint of Khalid Bagirov
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has started communication on the complaint of the lawyer Khalid Bagirov, excluded from the Bar Association of Azerbaijan. Turan was told by Bagirov himself.
The lawyer was expelled because of his speech at the trial of opposition leader, head of the movement REAL Ilgar Mamedov.
Under the pretext that the lawyer criticized the judicial system of the country, the Bar Association on 10 December 2014 decided to suspend his authority and went to court, demanding to eliminate Bagirov from this structure.
The lawyer believes that the true purpose of his removal is the desire of the authorities to prevent his defending the journalist Khadija Ismayilova.
Bagirov’s complaint was filed with the ECHR in January 2015, which raised the question of violation of the freedom of expression, guaranteed by Article 10 of the European Convention on Human Rights and Freedoms.
The application was accepted for consideration on a priority basis. The government is given time until October to respond to questions posed by the ECHR.
In 2011, Bagirov had a one-year deprivation of powers of attorney for performances in the media in connection with the death of his client Elvin Askerov at a police station. -03B06-
